Character / <캐릭터> 2011

Directed by: Son Kwang-ju / 손광주
Release date: November 2011

The first third of the film is surrealistic meta-cinema: a director, displaying a clichéd grasp of the intricacies of telling a story, lectures his producer in voice-over, while actors, without speaking, emerge from a run-down shack and begin to re-act to the director’s instructions. The middle third reverts to realism: an enfant terrible film director is working on a screenplay for his next film at the luxurious digs of his executive producer, arguing with her, throwing tantrums, and ordering around the novelist who has been hired to bring some artistry to the project. The director’s films so far have been commercial successes but panned by the critics and, while his intention is for his next film to be a critical success, it is obvious his personality will continue to get in the way. The final third of the spins back into surrealism again, with the actress/novelist/actress wandering around Seoul and then inside the run-down shack until she finally sets off across a field which turns into the ocean.

Very indie, experimental, self-indulgent, this film. Each real-life actor assumes the role of two or more characters: for example, Kim Soo-hyeon plays first a poor student, then the novelist, then a final role for which it is unclear who she is playing. Lots of contrapuntal sound effects. Lots of odd scenes spliced in throughout – a pair of wringing hands, a skull of perhaps a dog on the ground, views of old buildings in disrepair – none of us got what any of the symbolism of all this was supposed to mean or what the filmmakers were trying to say about filmmaking.
My take: no stars
Supporting actors, assembled before the
run-down shack, await the director’s instructions.

Glove / <글러브> 2011

Directed by: Kang Woo-seok / 강우석
Release date: January 2011

Kim Sang-nam, a heavy-drinking, hot-tempered professional baseball player on probation, is “volunteered” by his manager to coach a high school team at a school for the deaf in the countryside in order to rectify his bad image and get back into baseball. At first, Kim is a reluctant recruit for the job but the troubles of the star pitcher on the team nudge his interest and he begins to take his coaching position seriously and puts his heart into preparing the team for the Korean high-school baseball nationals. Apparently, the film is based on a true story.

As a film plot, it’s been done before: over-the-hill/in-bad-graces professional must scale down and go help out: at first she/he is unhappy, but then she/he gets with the program and everybody ends up winning. This film was a cross between Radio Star (Lee Joon-ik 2006) and Take Off (Kim Yong-hwa 2009), with a little My Piano (Kwon Hyeong-jin  2006) thrown in. Despite the trite plot, the film works and, for the most part, kept our interest. It was way too long, though (144 minutes) for a feel-good vehicle and could have been edited to tighten it up.
My take: 3 stars
The regular “coaches” get an earful from the
reluctant pro-baseball player “volunteer coach”
the first time he gets to see the team play
(Kang Shin-il, Yoo Seon, and Jeong Jae-yeong).

Quick / <퀵> 2011

Directed by: Jo Beom-goo / 조범구
Release date: July 2011

Former motorcycle gang member, Ki-su, now works for a quick-delivery service on his motorbike. Delivering a girl-group singer, Ah-rom, to her next performance, she puts on his helmet which turns out to be rigged to explode. She and he must deliver a series of packages in order to keep the bomb from going off.

The film starts off with speeding motorcycles, and some screaming and fighting going on among the riders. Then some policemen screaming. Then there is some speeding around Seoul on a motorcycle, then a concert with a lot of screaming and fighting which follows the girl-group members out to their van where it continues. The next scene has a speeding motorcycle and screaming and fighting both! I’m afraid that that is where we bailed. My take: DDD

Scene with screaming and fighting (in the van)
and a speeding motorcycle.

Green Days: the Dinosaur and I / <소중한 날의 꿈> 2011

Directed by: Ahn Jae-hoon and Han Hye-jin / 안재훈과 한혜진
Release date: June 2011
Better translation of the title: Dreams from a Precious Day.

It is the 1970s and Yi-rang is a high-school student in a country town. Her dream is to become an Olympic athlete but she fakes a collapse during a race rather than lose the race. Her new best friend will be the quirky and precocious classmate Soo-mi who comes from the big city of Seoul. Yi-rang will also experiment with a first love with classmate Chul-su who dreams of becoming an astronaut. They all plan, ponder, and dream of who they will be when they grow up.

I love this film! A thoughtful and sumptuous, yet gentle, animated depiction of growing up in a small town in the 1970s, rich with detail of small town life and high school days from that era, with an awesome musical score as well.
My take: CCC

The dream: a friendly little dinosaur frisks around Yi-rang's legs.
The days and years go by and the dinosaur will grow up
and go where Yi-rang can't follow.

Suicide Forecast / <수상한 고객들> 2011

Directed by: Jo Jin-mo / 조진모

Release date: April 2011

Mr. Bae is a rising star among insurance salesmen until he falls under suspicion of having helped one of his clients to commit suicide. Thinking back over some of his more questionable insurance sales, Bae hunts down these old customers to make sure that they don’t commit suicide, which could ruin his career.

Apparently the film is trying to say something about current social problems—such as social alienation and unethical business practices—but makes heavy going of it and while it is supposed to be a comedy, the film is not humorous either. We bailed half-way through. Furthermore, it was one of the most unappealing characterizations for one of my favorite actors, Ryoo Seung-beom (류승범). My take: DD
